Third Quarter Course Descriptions

The following descriptions provide a brief overview for the fourth grade's third quarter objectives in each subject.

Religion- “Blest Are We” (Silver, Burdett, Ginn)

We will work through chapter eight this quarter. This includes looking at God our role model in chapter five and learning about the sacrament of baptism in chapter six. Chapters seven and eight will focus on the Beatitudes and how we can be eternally happy. We will also continue our community service project of collecting Ziploc bags from each classroom to turn in for money for Cataldo. The second quarter prayer is the Salve Regina.

Math- “Everyday Math” (Wright Group/McGraw Hill)

We will learn how to multiply double-digits this quarter three different ways! Students will also work with REALLY BIG NUMBERS and scientific notation. In unit six we will learn long division as well as work with angles and protractors. Timed multiplication tests will continue this quarter - get ready to complete all facts in under five minutes!

Reading "Comprehension Tool Kit" and "Interactive Read-Alouds" (Firsthand)

Students will begin new literature groups this quarter focusing on different genres. As they read, comprehension strategies will be practiced. Using several types of non-fiction text, students will work on inferring meaning of difficult words and using non-fiction text features to help understand their reading.

Language Arts- “Lucy Caulkins" (Firsthand)

Our Tall Tales are growing! Students will type these whoppers, and have them on display in time for Open House. We will also work with several forms of poetry to create a class poetry booklet.

Social Studies - "Our Country and Its Regions" (Macmillan/McGraw-Hill)

We have now moved into the Northeast region. Students will learn all the states, capitals, and locations for this and the Southeast region this quarter. For each region we will study the resources, landforms, and economy that make it unique.

Science - "Discovery Works" (Silver Burdett Ginn)

We will finish up the third of our body's systems this quarter - the excretory system. We will wrap up the body by studying the spread of germs and the prevention and treatment of disease. We then move into magnetism and electricity. Students will create a circuit and experiment with insulators and conductors.
