Community Service is an integral part of our religion program, and Cataldo Catholic School is well-known for having the most comprehensive student service program that now dates back 20 years.
Students participate in many community service activities each year to foster lifelong desire for service to others and demonstrate a sense of moral and social responsibility. Gracious parent volunteers drive and chaperone, and our Community Service chairs work long hours to coordinate with agencies and keep this wonderful tradition alive!
Cataldo was awarded the Catholic Community Service Award by The Catholic Foundation of the Spokane Diocese in 2010, in honor of our support of the Childbirth and Parenting Assistance (CAPA) program of Catholic Charities Spokane. Every year, all grades help in one way or another to put on a very memorable Christmas party for CAPA children and families.
Pre-K through 2nd Grade
While students of this age do not leave campus to serve, they do, on occasion, provide support and crafts for various fund drives or events. Most of all, however, they see service demonstrated to them! “Mass buddies” are assigned, and older students are responsible for guiding younger students safely to church where they help them sing the hymns and stay attentive. These year long relationships foster special friendships! Older students also visit younger classrooms to assist with reading, crafting, or events.
Ronald McDonald House: 4-5 students visit once a month, preparing a craft before they go, taking it with them and hanging it on the doors of the families staying there. The students also receive a tour and learn about what services they provide.
House of Charity: 4-5 students visit once a month to prepare sack lunches that can be passed out to the homeless. The students work in the kitchen at a time when patrons are not on site, however, it is easy for them to see and “feel” the tremendous service the House of Charity provides as the staff always informs them for whom they are volunteering.
Meals on Wheels: 4-5 students rotate each month delivering hot, nutritious meals to elderly, disabled homebound. The students get a first- hand experience with being able to greet the people with a friendly smile and a balanced meal.
Crossing Guard and Home and School Association Support including setting up and serving at Soup for the Soul (a dinner during Lent).
7th & 8th Grade
Teams of our Junior High our deployed out into the community to serve in many ways! These two years provide tremendous opportunity for students to do more and learn more about serving those who need it most. They provide Weekly Church Clean Up after Mass each week and they visit

Summer is for Service and Fitness
Summer is for Service is a summer program that Cataldo pioneered thanks to a grant from Providence Healthcare. Now administered through Catholic Charities, this program is offered to students going into 6th grade to students going into the 8th grade. This program is offered Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30-noon for eight weeks during the summer. The program focuses on service opportunities, fitness, and mini-workshops on special topics that help students plan for the future. The combination of these programs help address increased sedentary life-style patterns that often occur in the summer months and contribute to obesity and low morale among youth. The mini-workshops offered are babysitting class, money camp, nutrition and more.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays students perform service at:
- Second Harvest Food Bank
- Food for All Farm
- St. Margaret’s Shelter
- House of Charity
- St. Anne’s Children and Family Center
- Catholic Charities Volunteer Choir Services
- Emilie Court
- WSU Food Sense
On Wednesdays, students are involved with fitness opportunities, such as:
- Bike riding
- Walking to Manito park and playing Ultimate Frisbee
