Cataldo Catholic School at St Augustine

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Community Service is an important part of our religion program. Cataldo Catholic School students participate in many community service activities each year to foster a lifelong desire for service to others and to demonstrate a sense of moral and social responsibility.

Cataldo was awarded the Catholic Community Service Award by The Catholic Foundation of the Spokane Diocese in 2010, in honor of our support of the Childbirth and Parenting Alone program.

Cataldo was also awarded the 2021 Volunteer of the Year by Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington for our commitment to community service.

Preschool

Preschool supports the CAPA Diaper Drive and Operation Gratitude.  Operation Gratitude collects and ships items for deployed military personnel. Students also create artwork for nursing homes and neighbors throughout the year.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten collects food and supplies for SCRAPS.  They also contribute gifts to the CAPA Christmas program.

First & Second Grade

First and second grade collect items for Family Promise.  They are also involved in the CAPA Christmas Party.

Third Grade

Third grade works with Catholic Relief Services Gifts of Hope program.  They are also part of a pen pal program.

Fourth Grade

Fourth grade works with St. Margaret’s Women and Children’s Shelter. Six students visit once a month to volunteer wherever needed. They sort diapers, clean the play room or sort in the Pearl Room. The students are driven by volunteer parent.

Fifth Grade

Fifth grade’s service project ensures the safety of the Cataldo Community. Each student participates in the school’s Safety Patrol Program. This volunteer opportunity has 5th graders acting as crossing guards each morning and afternoon.

Sixth Grade

Sixth grade participates in Meals on Wheels. Each month a group of students deliver hot, nutritious meals to elderly, disabled homebound.  The students get a first- hand experience with being able to greet the people with a friendly smile and a balanced meal.  Sixth grade holds a Spice Drive, which is part of Catholic Charities efforts.

Summer is for Service

A summer program sponsored by Wheatland Bank and SDS Realty is offered to students going into 6th to 8th grade.  The program focuses on service opportunities and fitness.   Mini-workshops are also offered, such as Wheatland Bank Money Camp.  The combination of these programs help address increased sedentary lifestyle patterns that often occur in the summer months and contribute to obesity and low morale among youth.  This program runs for six weeks during the summer months.
